What to Expect at a Traditional Silver Class Workshop: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you are planning your itinerary and looking for an inspiring experience in Bali, booking a Silver Class Workshop is likely on your shortlist. But if you have never worked with raw metals, high-heat blowtorches, or specialized jeweler tools before, you might be asking: What actually happens during a 3-hour class? Is it safe for beginners?

At Krisna Silver Class in Uluwatu, we welcome guests of all skill levels every single day. You don't need any prior silversmithing experience—just your creativity and enthusiasm.

Here is a complete, transparent walkthrough of what you will experience when you step into a Bali Silver Class at Krisna Silver Class.

Phase 1: Conceptualization & Design (15–20 Minutes)

Every great piece of jewelry begins with an idea. When you arrive at our studio, you will be greeted with a refreshing welcome drink while you browse through sample trays filled with rings, pendants, earrings, and bracelets created by past students.

  • Sketches & Planning: You can choose a classic design or sketch your own original idea. Your instructor will review your sketch to confirm metal dimensions and feasibility.
  • Selecting Your Material: You receive 5 grams of 925 Sterling Silver, which is weighed right in front of you.

Phase 2: Measuring, Cutting & Shaping (45 Minutes)

Once your design is finalized, it's time to get your hands dirty!

  1. Measuring & Marking: Using precision calipers and silver rulers, you will mark the exact length needed for your ring or pendant frame.
  2. Sawing with Jeweler’s Saw: You will learn how to hold a fine-blade jeweler’s saw blade, cutting the silver wire or sheet with steady, deliberate strokes.
  3. Stamping & Texturing: If you want to add personalized initials, secret coordinates, or textured surfaces (such as hammered, twisted, or tree-bark finishes), this is done while the metal is still flat using steel stamps and texturing hammers.

Phase 3: Annealing, Bending & Soldering (45 Minutes)

This is where the magic of physical transformation happens:

  • Annealing (Softening the Metal): Silver hardens as it is worked. Under your mentor’s direct supervision, you will use a blowtorch to heat the silver until it glows soft cherry red, making it pliable again.
  • Forming on a Mandrel: Using a steel ring mandrel and raw-hide mallet, you will bend the flat silver strip into a smooth round loop.
  • Soldering the Joint: You will apply a tiny dab of silver solder paste to the seam and direct the blowtorch flame over the joint until the solder flows smoothly across the seam, fusing the ends permanently.

Phase 4: Filing, Sanding & Polishing (45 Minutes)

The raw soldered piece now needs refining to reveal its true luster:

  • Filing & Beveling: Using hand files of varying coarseness, you will smooth out rough edges and solder marks.
  • Sanding: Progressing through fine sandpapers removes minor scratches.
  • Buffing & High Polishing: Finally, your piece goes onto the motorized polishing wheel. Watch in amazement as dull, oxidized metal transforms in seconds into a mirror-bright silver piece!
